Neumann MCM vs DPA 4099

The DPA 4099 has been my near constant companion for 10 years of amplified live shows, but I was deeply curious to try the new Neumann competitor. Here are a few samples of my very first comparisons.

I tried the two positions I’ve used for this kind of mic before. Pos 2 was the old standard, but I found it made the bass boomier. Pos 1 is a little more even, so it’s what I’ve been using in recent years. These were recorded in a moderately acoustically treated but not dead studio room, through an RME Babyface Pro. The viol is anonymous 17c French (more on her another time).
